How do families here pay for assisted living?
Most pay from savings, income and the sale of a home. Medicare doesn't cover assisted living rent. The main ways to stretch the money, all explained in our guide to paying for assisted living:
- Long-term care insurance, if your parent has a policy. Check the benefit trigger and the waiting period before benefits start.
- VA pension with Aid and Attendance. For a single veteran, the maximum is $29,093 a year from December 1, 2025, and the net worth limit is $163,699 (VA). See our Aid and Attendance guide.
- Florida Medicaid long-term care, as savings run down. In 2026 the income limit is $2,982 a month and the asset limit is $2,000 (DCF). Palm Beach County is in Medicaid Region G (s. 409.966), so ask whether a facility contracts with a Region G plan before you need it. Many higher-priced communities don't accept Medicaid at all.
Ask each facility for its base rate, its care-level fees and its last three years of increases. Our rate increases guide explains why the increases matter as much as the starting price.

What about hurricanes?
Palm Beach County has an address lookup for evacuation zones. Zones are areas "that may be inundated by storm surge." In Zone A, people living in mobile homes, substandard buildings or flood-prone areas evacuate first, and mandatory evacuations cover "the coastal area and barrier islands" (Palm Beach County Hurricane Planning Guide). Jupiter and Tequesta sit close to the Loxahatchee River and the Intracoastal Waterway, so check each address.
Assisted living facilities run their own evacuations, so ask where residents go and how they get there. Every facility must keep temperatures "at or below 81 degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum of ninety-six (96) hours" during a power cut. Facilities with 16 beds or fewer must store 48 hours of fuel on site, and larger ones 72 hours (rule 59A-36.025). Our hurricane questions guide has the full list.
