The short answer: If you're searching for assisted living in Viera, you won't find a "Viera" city listing. Viera is an unincorporated planned community, and its facilities hold Melbourne or Rockledge addresses. Our directory lists 23 licensed facilities with 989 beds in the two ZIP codes that cover Viera, 32940 and 32955, and 127 across Brevard County. Melbourne leans toward larger communities, while Palm Bay is mostly six-bed homes. Brevard's hospital map has also changed recently, so check which hospital a facility actually uses.
Where is Viera, and why doesn't it show up as a city?
Viera is a master-planned community in central Brevard County, not a city. The Census Bureau counts it as two "census designated places," Viera West and Viera East, which it defines as "closely settled, unincorporated communities" (Census Bureau). The U.S. Postal Service treats Viera as an acceptable place name for two ZIP codes: 32940, whose default city is Melbourne, and 32955, whose default city is Rockledge (USPS ZIP lookup). So a facility in Viera is licensed, and listed, under Melbourne or Rockledge.
Viera is also where county business happens. The Brevard County Government Center is at 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera (Brevard County).
How many assisted living facilities are in Melbourne, Viera and Brevard?
AssistedLivingFacility.com lists 127 licensed, active assisted living facilities in Brevard County, with 4,118 licensed beds:
| Area | Facilities | Licensed beds | 6 beds or fewer | 50 beds or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melbourne | 27 | 1,835 | 8 | 16 |
| Viera ZIP codes 32940 and 32955 | 23 | 989 | 9 | 8 |
| Rockledge | 14 | 375 | 8 | 2 |
| Palm Bay | 58 | 728 | 52 | 4 |
| West Melbourne | 5 | 206 | 2 | 2 |
| Brevard County total | 127 | 4,118 | 78 | 32 |
The Viera ZIP codes overlap the Melbourne and Rockledge rows, because those are the cities on the licenses. The pattern is clear, though. Melbourne and the Viera area have most of the county's large communities, the kind with apartments, a dining room and an activities calendar. Palm Bay, to the south, is mostly small residential homes. Our comparison of large and small facilities explains the differences in staffing and price.

Who lives here?
Brevard County had 663,982 residents in July 2025, and 26.5% were 65 or older (Census QuickFacts). Melbourne had 87,097 residents, 22.5% of them 65 or older (Census QuickFacts). Viera East is older still: 31.7% of residents are 65 or older, compared with 22.5% in Viera West, according to 2020–2024 survey data (Census QuickFacts).
Brevard also has a seasonal side. About 7% of the county's housing units, 21,250 homes, are kept for "seasonal, recreational, or occasional use" (Census ACS 2020–2024). If your parent spends winters here and summers up north, ask facilities about short stays. Our respite care guide explains how they work.
Which hospitals serve Melbourne and Viera?
Brevard's hospitals have changed in the past two years:
- Health First Viera Hospital, 8745 N. Wickham Road, with a Melbourne mailing address. It is a 98-bed hospital with a 24-hour emergency department (Health First).
- Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, a 550-bed hospital (Health First).
- Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital, 250 N. Wickham Road. Orlando Health took over this and two other former Steward hospitals in October 2024 (Orlando Health).
- Health First Palm Bay Hospital in Palm Bay (Health First).
Two changes matter for Rockledge and Viera families. Rockledge Hospital closed: "Effective April 23, 2025, Rockledge Hospital and its Emergency Room were closed" (Orlando Health). And Orlando Health has announced a new hospital campus in Viera, with its emergency department planned for fall 2027 (The Viera Company). Until then, ask each facility, especially in Rockledge, which emergency room its residents go to and how long the ambulance ride takes.
What do veterans need to know?
Brevard has a large military and space-industry community, and Viera has its own VA clinic. The Viera VA Clinic, at 2900 Veterans Way, is part of VA Orlando Health Care. It offers primary care, urgent care, and specialty care "including mental health care, surgery, orthopedics, dentistry, vision care (optometry), hearing loss (audiology)" (VA). For a veteran parent, a facility near the clinic saves a lot of driving.
For help with a VA pension or Aid and Attendance claim, Brevard County Veteran Services has accredited claims staff at offices in Merritt Island and Palm Bay (Brevard County). Our Aid and Attendance guide has the 2026 rates.
What about hurricanes?
Brevard publishes an evacuation zone lookup where you type in an address. Zone A "includes the barrier islands, Merritt Island and some mainland low-lying areas." Viera sits inland of the Indian River Lagoon, but check every address rather than assuming.
Evacuating residents is the facility's job, so ask where it goes and how residents get there. Every Florida facility must have backup power to keep temperatures "at or below 81 degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum of ninety-six (96) hours," and homes with 16 or fewer beds need only 48 hours of fuel on site, compared with 72 hours for larger buildings (rule 59A-36.025). Our hurricane questions guide lists the rest.
Who can help locally?

Reach it through the Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337 (Senior Resource Alliance). It screens for Florida Medicaid's long-term care program. Brevard is in Medicaid Region E (AHCA), so check that a facility works with a Region E plan if your parent may need Medicaid.
