The short answer: Manatee County has 42 licensed assisted living facilities with 2,597 beds in our directory, and 36 of them have Bradenton addresses. More than half have 50 beds or more, so this is a market of larger communities rather than small homes. Lakewood Ranch isn't a city: it's a master-planned community that straddles Manatee and Sarasota counties, and the county line decides which aging agency, Medicaid region and evacuation map apply to your parent. This guide covers facilities, hospitals, hurricanes, paying for care and getting around.

How many assisted living facilities are in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch?

AssistedLivingFacility.com lists these licensed, active facilities:

Area Facilities Licensed beds 6 beds or fewer 50 beds or more
Bradenton addresses 36 2,402 4 21
Palmetto 2 95 0 1
Manatee County 42 2,597 6 23
Sarasota County, for comparison 87 6,203 16 52

Lakewood Ranch itself has no city address for most of its facilities. In the four ZIP codes that the Postal Service accepts as "Lakewood Ranch" (34202, 34211, 34212 and 34240), our directory lists 9 facilities with 776 beds, and 6 of them have 50 beds or more. Most use Bradenton or Sarasota mailing addresses, so search by ZIP code rather than by town name.

The practical upshot: most families here are comparing larger communities with full activity calendars, dining rooms and staff awake overnight. If your parent would do better in a small, homelike setting, the choice is thin, with only six small homes in the whole county. Our comparison of large and small facilities covers the trade-offs. What is Lakewood Ranch, exactly?

Lakewood Ranch is unincorporated. The Census Bureau counts it as a census-designated place in both Manatee and Sarasota counties (Census Bureau place file), and CDPs "are not legally incorporated" (Census glossary). Its roads and common areas are run by special districts, including a stewardship district covering "over 25,000 acres of land located in Manatee and Sarasota Counties" (Lakewood Ranch Stewardship District).

For families, the county line matters more than the name. Two Lakewood Ranch addresses can sit in different counties, and that changes who you call for help and which Medicaid plans apply, as the sections below explain.

Who lives here?

Census survey data for 2020–2024 puts Lakewood Ranch's population at 43,945, with a median age of 53.5 and 30.8% of residents aged 65 or older. Bradenton's share is 28.1%, Manatee County's 28.5% and Sarasota County's 37.5% (ACS 2020–2024). Manatee County had 468,200 residents in July 2025, and 137,879 of them were 65 or older (Census Bureau county estimates).

With that many older residents, good communities can fill up. Start your search before a hospital discharge forces a decision in days.

Which hospitals serve Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton?

  • Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, 8330 Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, operated by a subsidiary of Universal Health Services (Lakewood Ranch Medical Center).
  • HCA Florida Blake Hospital, 2020 59th Street West, Bradenton, a 383-bed hospital and "the only Level II Trauma Center and Burn Center in Manatee County" (HCA Florida).
  • Manatee Memorial Hospital, 206 Second Street East, Bradenton, a 295-bed hospital (Manatee Memorial).
  • Sarasota Memorial ER at Lakewood Ranch, 7250 University Parkway, a 21-room freestanding emergency room that opened in January 2025 (Sarasota Memorial). A freestanding ER treats emergencies, but a resident who needs to be admitted will be transferred to a hospital.

For veterans, the Bradenton VA Clinic is at 5520 State Route 64, part of the Bay Pines VA system (VA), and there's a Sarasota VA Clinic on Bee Ridge Road. Ask each facility which hospital its residents usually go to and whether it helps with VA appointments. Our VA Aid and Attendance guide covers the pension.

What about hurricanes?

Manatee County uses hurricane evacuation levels A through E. "Evacuation levels are not the same as flood zones and do not correlate to the category of a hurricane," and "Level A residents will be evacuated first." Anyone in a mobile home, manufactured home or RV "must evacuate when hurricane evacuation Level A is issued, regardless of where you're located" (Manatee County). Look up each facility's exact address on the county's evacuation level map. For a Sarasota County address, use Sarasota County's own lookup.

Assisted living facilities run their own evacuations, so ask where residents go and how they get there. Every facility must keep temperatures "at or below 81 degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum of ninety-six (96) hours" during a power cut. Facilities with 16 beds or fewer must store 48 hours of fuel on site, and larger ones 72 hours (rule 59A-36.025). Our hurricane questions guide has the full checklist.

Who can help locally?

This is where the county line matters most:

Manatee County address Sarasota County address
Area Agency on Aging Senior Connection Center, 1-800-963-5337 (SCC) Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida, 866-413-5337 (AAA SWFL)
Medicaid long-term care region Region D Region F (s. 409.966)

If your parent may need Medicaid later, ask each facility whether it contracts with a plan in the right region. Manatee County residents aged 60 and older can also call the county's Elder Helpline at (941) 742-5818, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for in-home services that can delay a move. "Some programs require a co-pay based on a sliding fee scale" (Manatee County).

How do families here pay?

Most pay privately from savings, income and home sales. The main ways to stretch the money in 2026:

  • VA pension with Aid and Attendance. Up to $29,093 a year for a single veteran, or $34,488 with one dependent. The net worth limit is $163,699 through November 30, 2026 (VA).
  • Florida Medicaid long-term care. The income limit is $2,982 a month and the asset limit $2,000 for a single person (DCF). Our Medicaid guide explains how the program covers assisted living.
  • Long-term care insurance, if your parent already has a policy. Our long-term care insurance guide explains the claim process.

Larger communities often charge a base rate plus care fees. Our guide to levels of care explains what to ask, and our rate increases guide explains why the yearly increase matters as much as the starting price.

Independent living or a life plan community?

Many Lakewood Ranch retirees start in independent living or a 55+ neighborhood. If your parent is still independent but wants care on the same campus later, Florida's insurance regulator lists three continuing care communities in Manatee County: Freedom Village of Bradenton, Westminster Bradenton and Emerson Lakes in Lakewood Ranch, which held only a provisional certificate on the October 2025 list (OIR CCRC map). Our guide to independent living in Florida explains entrance fees, refunds and what to check.

Getting around and visiting

  • MCAT Route 12 runs along State Road 70 east to the Lakewood Ranch Walmart at Ranch Lake Boulevard, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday (Manatee County). Wider bus service inside Lakewood Ranch is still under review, with "no set time" (Manatee County, January 2025).
  • MCAT Handy Bus offers door-to-door paratransit "for individuals who are unable to use fixed route buses, due to a disability." It "is currently a Fare Free Program" and runs daily from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Call (941) 748-2317 (Manatee County).
  • Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) handled a record 4.5 million passengers in 2025 (SRQ), which helps relatives flying in.

In practice, most visitors will drive. Ask each facility whether it provides transportation to medical appointments and outings.

How do we shortlist?

  1. Check which county the address is in. It decides the aging agency, the Medicaid region and the evacuation map.
  2. Check each license and inspection record with our 10-minute license check.
  3. Ask about care fees and increases, not just the base rate.
  4. Ask about hurricanes: the facility's evacuation level, where residents go, and the generator.
  5. Tour at mealtime with our tour checklist.
