Senior communities have different senior housing strategies that a prospective resident must evaluate carefully in order to choose the best place that will suit their needs. Choosing a retirement community can be overwhelming because there are plenty of them in different types and with several options to offer. The best way to narrow you’re your choices is to determine beforehand your own preferences and needs. This will help avoid or reduce suitability problems in the future.

Every community has its own senior housing strategies such as different services and facilities to offer residents in the community. There are three types of senior housing strategies that correspond to the three types of retirement living. These are independent living, assisted living and nursing homes. Independent living is for seniors who are self-reliant and are still physically able to take care of themselves. Seniors who are independent often value their privacy highly and do not need too much assistance. Homes for independent living are usually small and require little maintenance.

“Assisted living” senior housing strategies is different from independent living, in that it provides non-medical services such as assistance in food preparation, bathing and grooming, regular supervision and assistance with other daily routine tasks whenever needed. Nursing homes are totally different from independent living and assisted living because they are mainly for seniors who have chronic illnesses like Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other similar conditions. Chronically sick seniors need full time medical attention from an expert medical staff and adequate medical emergency equipment and facilities, which are provided by nursing homes.

For effective evaluation of senior housing strategies and options, here are some helpful guidelines:

• Seniors should know what they want and need in a retirement home.

• Determine if there is a need for services like bathing, grooming, laundry, meal preparation and feeding, round the clock supervision and, most important of all, medical attention when needed.

• Check the facilities and amenities. Seniors also need to get involved in recreational activities to keep them healthy. A good senior housing community should have activities like playing tennis, playing golf, regular visits to parks, going to museums and concerts and other leisurely activities.

• Find out the cost of living in the community. Proper management of finances is important especially if the person is looking forward to better than average facilities and services. It is recommended to seek assistance from a financial advisor to help with retirement planning.

• Check out the senior retirement community personally. This is the best way to see if the place is well-maintained and if the senior community has sufficient supplies needed such as food, household and medical supplies. It is also an opportunity to get first-hand feedback about the community from the residents.
